BELMOND EUROPEAN BARGE CRUISES FAQs

What exactly is included in a Belmond barge cruise?

Pretty much everything - and that's the beauty of it. All meals and drinks are included, from continental breakfast to a multi-course dinner paired with wines sourced directly from the regions you're sailing through. Guided shore excursions, transfers, and the services of an expert crew are all part of the package. The only things not covered are your flights to France, personal expenses, and crew gratuities (5-10% is customary and very much appreciated).

How many people can travel on a Belmond barge?

Each barge is intimate by design - that's the whole point. The fleet ranges from Alouette, which accommodates just 4 guests in 2 cabins, all the way up to Pivoine and Napoléon, which each sleep 12 guests across 6 cabins. Most barges are available for private charter only, meaning the boat is entirely yours. Napoléon is the one exception - it can also be booked on a per-cabin basis if you're traveling as a couple or small group.

How much does a Belmond barge cruise cost?

Pricing varies by barge, season, and itinerary, but as a general benchmark, a full private charter of Coquelicot in Champagne runs from around 82,000 EUR in value season up to 109,000+ EUR during peak weeks. When you factor in that all meals, wines, excursions, and transfers are included for your entire group, the per-person value is genuinely impressive. Reach out and I'll pull current pricing and availability for the specific barge and dates you have in mind.

What is the best time of year to cruise with Belmond in France?

The barges operate from April through October. Late spring - May and June - is my personal favorite to recommend. The French countryside is lush, the weather is warm but not stifling, and the crowds haven't peaked yet. July and August are beautiful but book up fast and command peak pricing. September is a hidden gem, especially for wine lovers - harvest season in Burgundy and Champagne is something else entirely.

Can children come on a Belmond barge cruise?

Yes, and families are actually a perfect fit for private charter. When you book the full barge for your group, children of all ages are welcome. Belmond can provide high chairs, cots, and even children's bicycles with helmets. If you're booking on a per-cabin basis on the Napoléon, the minimum age is 12. Either way, the pace is relaxed, the scenery is gorgeous, and there's plenty to keep curious kids engaged on shore excursions.

Which Belmond barge should I choose?

It really comes down to your group size and which region of France speaks to you. Coquelicot is magical for champagne lovers - it even includes a private lunch hosted by the chef and sommelier of Ruinart. Lilas and Fleur de Lys are both set in Burgundy, ideal for wine and food enthusiasts. Pivoine and Napoléon cruise through Provence, and Alouette winds through the Bordeaux region. There's also a brand new barge - Marguerite - launching in Burgundy in summer 2026. I love helping clients match the right barge to the right trip, so let's talk through it.

This is where working with TopFlight Travels makes a real difference - and it goes well beyond what most people expect.

As a member of Belmond's invitation-only Bellini Club TopFlight Travels can attach exclusive benefits to your booking that simply aren't available when you book direct - at the exact same rate you'd pay on Belmond's own website.

For barge and train journeys, that typically includes:

An onboard credit of $50-100 per person per journey
Priority cabin upgrade consideration at embarkation
VIP welcome treats and a personal welcome letter from the crew
A $500 Belmond gift voucher when your booking reaches $5,000 or more, applicable toward a future Belmond experience
And because I'm also your logistics partner, no hold times with the cruise line, no booking fees, no surprises. You just show up and sail.
