Each barge is intimate by design - that's the whole point. Most barges are available for private charter only, meaning the boat is entirely yours. Napoléon is the one exception - it can also be booked on a per-cabin basis if you're traveling as a couple or small group.

The barges operate from April through October. Late spring - May and June - is my personal favorite to recommend. The French countryside is lush, the weather is warm but not stifling, and the crowds haven't peaked yet. July and August are beautiful but book up fast and command peak pricing. September is a hidden gem, especially for wine lovers - harvest season in Burgundy and Champagne is something else entirely.

Yes, and families are actually a perfect fit for private charter. When you book the full barge for your group, children of all ages are welcome. Belmond can provide high chairs, cots, and even children's bicycles with helmets. If you're booking on a per-cabin basis on the Napoléon, the minimum age is 12. Either way, the pace is relaxed, the scenery is gorgeous, and there's plenty to keep curious kids engaged on shore excursions.
